Car Insurance Check — Verify Insurance Status Before Buying
Driving an uninsured vehicle is illegal and can result in a £300 fine, 6 penalty points, and immediate vehicle seizure. Here is how to check a car's insurance status and what to arrange before driving a newly purchased vehicle.
The Motor Insurance Database (MID)
Every insured vehicle in the UK must be registered on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) within 14 days of the policy starting. Police ANPR cameras check against this database in real time — they do not need to pull a car over to know it is uninsured.
The public can query the MID via askMID at askmid.com. It returns a simple yes/no: the car either appears as insured or it does not. It does not reveal the insurer, policyholder name, or who is covered to drive.
How to Check Insurance Status
- Visit askmid.com
- Enter the vehicle registration number
- Complete the verification
- Result shows whether the vehicle is currently insured
MID update lag
The MID can take up to 14 days to update after a new policy starts. A newly insured car may not appear immediately. Always carry proof of insurance (confirmation email or certificate) when driving a recently insured vehicle.
Insurance When Buying a Used Car
The previous owner's insurance does not transfer when you buy a used car. You must arrange your own policy before driving, even for a single mile home from the seller.
Most insurers allow you to get a quote and activate a policy using only the registration number — before you physically have the car. Do this in advance so you can legally drive away.
Penalties for Driving Uninsured
Fixed Penalty
£300 fine and 6 penalty points — issued immediately at the roadside
Court Prosecution
Unlimited fine if convicted, potential driving ban
Vehicle Seizure
Police can seize and impound the vehicle on the spot
Vehicle Destruction
Unclaimed impounded vehicles can be crushed
Insurance History When Buying
Beyond checking current status, a vehicle history report can reveal past insurance claims — accidents and damage that the seller may not have disclosed. Claims data comes from insurer records and is not available through askMID or DVLA tools.
