How to Check Car History UK

A step-by-step guide to checking a used car's history before you hand over any money. From free government checks to a full HPI-level report — here is exactly what to do.

Step 1 — Free DVLA Check

The first step costs nothing. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) publishes basic vehicle information for every registered UK car. You can verify the make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, year of first registration, current MOT status and road tax status using the DVLA's own online service at gov.uk, or instantly through VEHIXA's free check.

This step takes 30 seconds and immediately tells you whether the car in front of you matches what the seller advertised. If the colour, age or fuel type differs from the listing, that is a serious red flag and you should investigate before going any further.

Step 2 — MOT History Check

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) maintains a complete record of every MOT test carried out in the UK. This is publicly accessible and free. MOT history is one of the most valuable data sources available to a used car buyer because it provides a timestamped mileage record at every test.

Look for the mileage progression across tests — it should increase steadily. A sudden drop or an implausibly low reading is a strong indicator of clocking (odometer fraud). Also review past failures and advisories. Recurring advisories for the same item across multiple tests suggest a persistent mechanical issue the current owner has never properly addressed.

Step 3 — Finance Check

This is one of the most important checks you can do and it is not available for free. Around 1 in 5 used cars in the UK has outstanding finance secured against it — meaning a finance company legally owns the vehicle until the debt is cleared. If you buy a car with outstanding finance, the finance company can repossess it from you even though you paid the seller in good faith. You would lose the car and your money.

A finance check searches the national finance register to confirm whether any HP, PCP or lease agreement is currently outstanding against the vehicle. This single check can save you thousands of pounds and is included in VEHIXA's full report from £11.99.

Step 4 — Full HPI-Level Check

Once you have done the free checks, a full vehicle history report brings together everything in one place. A comprehensive check from VEHIXA covers outstanding finance, stolen vehicle database searches via the Police National Computer, insurance write-off category history (Cat A, B, S and N), keeper change records, number plate change history, colour changes, import and export records, VIC check status, and a current market valuation.

Run the full check before you arrange a viewing or test drive — not after. Knowing the vehicle's history before you meet the seller means you arrive informed, can ask the right questions, and are in a stronger position to negotiate or walk away if the history does not match what you were told.

What to Do if Something Shows Up

If a check reveals a problem — outstanding finance, a write-off marker, or a stolen flag — do not proceed without getting clear answers from the seller. Finance can sometimes be settled at the point of sale with written confirmation from the lender. A write-off history is not automatically a dealbreaker, but you should get an independent inspection and ensure the price reflects the history. A stolen marker, however, means you should not buy the car under any circumstances and should report the listing to Action Fraud.
