Free Car Owner Check — What You Can Look Up Without Paying
Before spending anything on a vehicle history report, it is worth understanding what you can find out for free — and where the free data ends and a paid check begins.
What the Free Check Returns
VEHIXA's free vehicle check pulls data from the DVLA and DVSA registers at no cost. For ownership specifically, the free check returns:
- Number of previous registered keepers— the count of how many times the V5C has changed hands, sourced directly from DVLA records
- Date first registered — when the vehicle first appeared on the DVLA register
- V5C last issued date — when the current logbook was last printed, which reveals recent ownership changes
- MOT status and full MOT history— from DVSA records, including mileage at each test
- Road tax status — whether the vehicle is currently taxed, SORN, or untaxed
What Is Not Available for Free
The free check does not return:
- Keeper names or addresses — protected under UK GDPR; never available through any commercial service
- Outstanding finance data — whether a finance company has a registered interest in the vehicle (this requires an Experian AutoCheck query)
- Insurance write-off markers — whether the vehicle has been categorised by an insurer as a write-off (Cat S, Cat N, Cat B, Cat A)
- Theft markers — whether the vehicle is recorded as stolen on the Police National Computer
Interpreting Keeper Count
The number of previous keepers is one of the most referenced figures in any vehicle check. Here is how to read it sensibly:
- One previous keeper — a car that has only ever had one registered keeper. Desirable for older vehicles, but note that fleet operators can be "one keeper" while the car was driven by many different fleet drivers.
- Two to four keepers — typical for a car more than five years old. No cause for concern on its own.
- Five or more keepers in under three years— worth scrutiny. Rapid keeper changes may indicate undisclosed problems being passed on.
When a Paid Check Is Worth It
For any purchase above a few hundred pounds, a full check that includes outstanding finance is essential. Outstanding finance is the single most common hidden problem with used cars — if you buy a car with an active finance agreement, the finance company can legally repossess it, leaving you without a car and without your money. This risk cannot be identified from a free check alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a free car owner check show?
A free car owner check shows the number of previous registered keepers, the date the vehicle was first registered, and when the V5C logbook was last issued. It does not show names or addresses — that data is protected under UK GDPR.
Is there a completely free way to check how many owners a car has had?
Yes. VEHIXA's free vehicle check includes keeper count from DVLA data at no cost. The DVLA's own free enquiry at gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax also shows some vehicle details, though it does not show keeper history in detail.
Does a high number of previous owners mean a car is bad?
Not necessarily. Many keepers on an older, high-mileage car is normal. What matters is the pattern — multiple keepers in a short period on a newer car warrants investigation. Also note that fleet vehicles (hire cars, company cars) may show one keeper but have had many drivers.
What does the V5C issue date tell me?
The V5C issue date is when the current logbook was printed. A recently issued V5C on an older car usually means a change of keeper occurred recently. If the seller says they have owned the car for three years but the V5C was issued last month, that is a discrepancy worth investigating.
What does a paid full check add to the ownership picture?
A full check adds outstanding finance data (whether someone else has a legal claim on the vehicle), insurance write-off markers, theft records, and more detailed Experian data on the ownership timeline. These are the checks that matter most before paying significant money for a used car.
