How to Check If a Car Is Taxed — Vehicle Tax Status

Road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) is a legal requirement for any vehicle driven or parked on a public road in the UK. Checking a car's tax status takes seconds and is completely free via the DVLA.

How to Check Tax Status

The DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry Service (vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk) is the official free tool. Enter any UK registration number and it instantly returns:

  • Whether the vehicle is currently taxed
  • The date the current tax expires
  • MOT expiry date
  • Make, colour, and engine size

Penalties for Driving Untaxed

DVLA uses a network of ANPR cameras that automatically identify untaxed vehicles. You do not need to be pulled over — a penalty notice can be issued automatically when your registration is detected.

Fixed Penalty

£80 fine, reduced to £40 if paid within 28 days

Court Fine

Up to £1,000 if the case goes to court

Vehicle Clamping

Untaxed vehicles found on public roads can be clamped or impounded

Back Duty

DVLA can charge back duty for the period the vehicle was untaxed

Buying a Car With Expired Tax

When you buy a used car, the existing tax is automatically cancelled by DVLA and the previous keeper receives a refund. Tax does not transfer to you — you must tax the vehicle in your name before driving it on a public road.

Tax online at gov.uk/tax-vehicle before collecting the car, or arrange transport rather than driving home untaxed. You will need the V5C reference number or the new keeper slip (V5C/2) from the seller.

Keeping a Car Off Road — SORN

If a vehicle is kept off all public roads (e.g., stored in a private garage or driveway), you can declare a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) with the DVLA to exempt it from tax. A SORN means the car must not be driven or parked on any public road.
