Finding Car Ownership Records — How to Trace Car Owners
Understanding car ownership records and how to access them is important when buying, selling, or investigating a vehicle. Here is what information is available and how to access it legally.
What Ownership Information Is Public?
DVLA holds detailed ownership records, but privacy law restricts what is publicly accessible. Through legitimate channels you can access:
- Keeper count — how many registered keepers the vehicle has had
- Ownership dates — when the vehicle changed hands (anonymized)
- Current V5C details — as shown by the seller
Personal details of previous keepers (names, addresses) are protected under GDPR and not publicly accessible. Only DVLA can release these, and only in specified legal circumstances.
How to Access Ownership History
Vehicle history report
Shows keeper count and approximate ownership change dates. The most practical tool for buyers — run this before viewing.
V5C logbook
Page 1 lists the number of previous keepers. The document reference also shows the current keeper's registration date.
DVLA V888 application
Organisations and individuals with a legitimate reason (e.g., pursuing a civil claim) can apply to DVLA for keeper information using form V888. Not available for general enquiries.
Interpreting Keeper History When Buying
Keeper history reveals patterns that help assess the car's background:
- One or two careful previous owners is ideal
- Fleet vehicle (e.g., rental, courtesy car) typically means more regular servicing but harder use
- Multiple rapid keeper changes may mean successive owners discovered problems
- A very long first keeper period (5+ years) often indicates a well-maintained, single-owner car
Verifying the Seller Is the Registered Keeper
Ask to see the V5C and verify the registered keeper's name and address matches the seller and the collection location. A mismatch — especially a different address to where the car is kept — is a red flag for "trade seller posing as private" or a fraudulent listing.
