Free Car Vehicle Check — What Information Is Available
There is a surprising amount of information you can access for free before buying a used car. The UK government makes DVLA and DVSA data publicly available — and knowing where to look can save you from a costly mistake.
What Is Available for Free
DVSA MOT History (gov.uk/check-mot-history)
Full MOT test history — pass/fail results, test dates going back ~20 years, mileage recorded at each test, failure reasons, and advisories. Free and authoritative.
DVLA Vehicle Enquiry (vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk)
Tax status and expiry, MOT expiry date, make, colour, engine size, fuel type, CO2 emissions, Euro emissions standard. Free and instant.
What Free Checks Cannot Show
Free government tools do not include data held in private databases:
- Outstanding finance — whether a PCP, HP, or loan remains unpaid
- Stolen vehicle status — police database records
- Write-off categories — insurance write-off history (Cat A, B, S, N)
- Insurance claims — past accident and damage claims
- Detailed keeper history — dates and number of ownership changes
How to Use the Free Check Strategically
Use free checks as a first filter — before you invest time viewing the car. The MOT mileage history alone can eliminate fraudulent listings: if a car shows lower mileage at a recent MOT than at an older one, the odometer has been tampered with.
If the free check does not raise red flags, run a full paid check before viewing or making an offer. The cost of £5–15 is trivial against the risk of buying a car with hidden finance or a write-off history.
