About the Ford Puma

The Ford Puma is a small crossover built on the Fiesta platform and sold in the UK since late 2019 (not to be confused with the 1997–2002 Puma coupe). Most used examples have the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine, usually with mild-hybrid assistance, and the performance Puma ST uses a 1.5 EcoBoost. A facelift in 2024 updated the infotainment and driver-assistance technology.

Common Ford Puma Problems to Check

These are issues commonly reported on Ford Puma models. Not every car is affected, and exact years and engines matter. Review the MOT history for any advisory items related to these areas, and raise them directly with the seller during viewing.

  • Early cars have been subject to recall campaigns (reported items include the hybrid battery connection, driver's airbag retention springs, an eCall software update and engine oil separators), so check recall work has been completed
  • Owner complaints include battery problems and interior quality
  • Top-spec alloy wheels are prone to kerb damage, and paint and body repairs can be expensive

Ford Puma Buying Tips

  • Check the GOV.UK recall checker, or ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN, and make sure any early-build recall work is recorded
  • Ask a Ford dealer, quoting the VIN, how the engine's timing and oil-pump drive are arranged and when any belt replacement is due (Ford's earlier 1.0 EcoBoost engines use belts that run in the engine oil)
  • On a Puma ST, look for signs of hard use such as uneven tyre wear and a patchy service history
  • Test the infotainment screen, parking sensors and cameras during the viewing, and check whether the car is pre- or post-2024 facelift (What Car? does not recommend the post-facelift Puma ST with the Powershift automatic)

Reliability Summary

The Puma is generally well regarded as a used buy, but What Car?'s reliability survey has placed it in the lower part of the small SUV class, so buy on recall status and service history rather than assuming it will be trouble-free.

A full report from £9.99 adds finance, stolen, write-off, keeper history, plate changes, market valuation, and a downloadable PDF — everything you need before handing over money for a Ford Puma.

Ford Puma FAQs

What should I check when buying a used Ford Puma?

Run a full vehicle history check for finance, stolen status, and write-off history. Check the full MOT history for mileage consistency. Check the GOV.UK recall checker, or ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN, and make sure any early-build recall work is recorded.

Is it safe to buy a high-mileage Ford Puma?

A high-mileage Ford Puma can be a good purchase if it has full service history and a clean MOT record. Use the DVSA MOT history to verify mileage progression and check for recurring advisories.

Does the Ford Puma commonly have outstanding finance?

Finance is common across all used car segments, and the Ford Puma is no exception. Always run a finance check through VEHIXA's full report before any private purchase — a lender can repossess a car even if you paid the seller in good faith.
