About the Mercedes C-Class
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a compact executive saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet. The W204 (2007–2014), W205 (2014–2021) and W206 (2021 onwards) generations are all traded, with diesel models and, on the W206, plug-in hybrids available. Costs and reliability differ a lot between generations, so the exact model year matters.
Common Mercedes C-Class Problems to Check
These are issues commonly reported on Mercedes C-Class models. Not every car is affected, and exact years and engines matter. Review the MOT history for any advisory items related to these areas, and raise them directly with the seller during viewing.
- W205 (2014–2021): Carbuyer describes a weak reliability record for pre-2018 cars, with post-2018 facelifted cars faring better; What Car? and Auto Express report numerous recalls (reported items include power steering, seatbelts, airbags and, on some early-2019 builds, the crankshaft)
- W205: owners report squeaky door seals, squealing front brakes and infotainment or sat-nav glitches
- W205 petrols: Autocar notes premature thermostat failure on some 1.6 and 2.0-litre cars and loose or porous fuel lines on a number of cars
- W204 (2007–2014): What Car? warns about rust near the boot-lid edge, fragile COMAND infotainment and a clunking from the optional seven-speed automatic, which can point to an expensive transmission valve fault
- W206 (2021 onwards): Auto Express reports the nine-speed automatic can have faulty solenoids, sensors and software problems that cause jerky shifts, with recalls including over-filled transmission fluid and software campaigns
Mercedes C-Class Buying Tips
- Ask a Mercedes dealer, quoting the VIN, to confirm all recall work and software updates have been done
- Test the electrics and sat-nav, and listen for suspension and gearbox noises
- On a plug-in hybrid, check the charging cable is present and undamaged
- Prefer a full dealer or specialist service history, and note that dealer servicing and sat-nav map updates are costly
Mileage Warning
Check mileage progression in the DVSA MOT history and prioritise a complete service record.
Reliability Summary
Reviewers rate the C-Class as comfortable but not especially dependable: What Car? reports nearly a third of W205 owners having a problem, and Carbuyer says post-2018 facelifted cars fare better. What Car? rates W206 reliability as poor. Recall status and service history matter.
