Tax and MOT — Two Separate Legal Requirements

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) tax and an MOT certificate are both legal requirements for driving on a UK public road — but they are entirely separate. A car can have a valid MOT but be untaxed, or be taxed but have an expired MOT. Checking both together in a single search is the fastest way to confirm a vehicle is fully legal to drive.

VEHIXA queries the DVLA in real time and returns both statuses together alongside the full DVSA MOT history — all free, no account required.

What the Tax and MOT Check Shows

Tax Status

Taxed — the vehicle has a current, valid Vehicle Excise Duty licence. The check shows the exact expiry date so you can see how long is left on the current tax.

SORN — the keeper has declared the vehicle as kept off the public road. A SORN vehicle cannot legally be driven until it is taxed. If you are buying a SORN vehicle, you must tax it before driving it away — which requires the V5C to be transferred to your name.

Untaxed (not SORN) — an untaxed vehicle that has not been declared SORN is in breach of VED law. The DVLA can clamp and impound the vehicle or issue a financial penalty to the registered keeper.

MOT Status

Valid MOT — the vehicle passed its most recent MOT test and the certificate is still current. The check shows the expiry date. Note that a valid MOT only confirms the car met minimum roadworthiness at the time of the last test — it is not a guarantee of current condition.

Expired MOT— the certificate has lapsed. The vehicle cannot legally be driven on a public road (except to a pre-booked MOT test). A seller claiming the car is in daily use but showing an expired MOT is either driving illegally or misrepresenting the vehicle's use.

Full MOT History

In addition to the current MOT status, every free VEHIXA check includes the complete DVSA MOT history — every recorded test, the mileage at each test, advisories, and failure reasons. This is significantly more useful than the current status alone and is not available through the DVLA's own free enquiry service.

Why Check Tax and MOT Before Buying a Used Car?

Checking tax and MOT status is one of the first things to do when considering any used car purchase. It takes seconds and costs nothing, and it can immediately reveal problems the seller may not have disclosed.

A car advertised as "ready to drive away" should have both current tax and a valid MOT. If either has lapsed, the seller is either not being honest about the car's readiness or the vehicle has not been maintained as claimed. In either case, it is relevant information for your negotiation.

An expired MOT also means the car has not been independently inspected for roadworthiness recently. Combined with a review of the full MOT history — looking at the frequency of advisories, recurring issues, and mileage progression — you get a much clearer picture of the vehicle's actual condition.

Beyond Tax and MOT — Full Vehicle Check

Tax and MOT are important checks, but they cannot reveal the most financially dangerous risks in a used car purchase. A car can be fully taxed, hold a current MOT, and still be:

  • Subject to an outstanding finance agreement that allows the finance company to repossess it from you
  • Reported stolen and liable to be seized by police
  • An insurance write-off (Cat S or Cat N) that has been repaired and put back on the road
  • A clocked vehicle where the mileage has been wound back to inflate the price

A full VEHIXA report from £9.99 covers all of these risks — finance, stolen, write-off, full keeper history, mileage anomaly analysis, and market valuation — in one report backed by Experian's £10,000 Data Accuracy Guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a car have a valid MOT but no tax?

Yes. MOT and VED tax are completely separate. A car can pass its MOT and then remain untaxed — or lose its tax while still holding a valid MOT certificate.

Is checking tax and MOT free?

Yes. Both tax and MOT status are publicly accessible DVLA data. Checking them on VEHIXA is completely free with no account required.

What if I buy a car with no MOT?

You can only drive it to a pre-booked MOT test. Once it has passed an MOT you can then tax it and drive normally. Factor the cost of the MOT test and any repair work into your purchase price.

How current is the data?

VEHIXA queries the DVLA and DVSA in real time. Tax changes and SORN declarations are typically reflected within 24 hours; MOT results are usually added within minutes of the test completing.
