UK Driving Theory and Hazard Perception Test Guide
Passing the theory test is the first formal step to a UK driving licence. Here is everything you need to know about both sections, how they are scored, and how to prepare.
Multiple-Choice Section
The first part of the theory test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from the DVSA question bank. Topics include:
- Highway Code rules and road signs
- Vehicle safety and mechanical awareness
- Motorway driving
- Vulnerable road users
- Eco-friendly driving
Pass mark: 43 out of 50. Time allowed: 57 minutes. The test is on a touchscreen at a DVSA test centre. You can flag questions for review.
Hazard Perception Section
Hazard perception consists of 14 video clips of driving scenarios. In each clip, you click the mouse (or touchscreen) when you see a developing hazard — a situation that requires the driver to take action such as slowing, stopping, or changing direction.
Each clip has one scoreable hazard worth up to 5 points (one clip has two hazards). The scoring window opens when the hazard starts developing. Click early in the window = 5 points; click later = lower score; miss the window = 0. Random clicking or clicking in a pattern automatically scores 0 for that clip.
Pass mark: 44 out of 75. No time limit per clip (clips play to completion).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UK driving theory test?
The UK driving theory test has two parts: a multiple-choice section (50 questions, 43 correct to pass) and a hazard perception section (14 video clips, score 44 out of 75 to pass). Both must be passed in the same session. The test is administered by the DVSA at approved test centres.
How does hazard perception scoring work?
Each hazard perception clip is worth up to 5 points. Click when you spot a developing hazard — the earlier you spot it (within the scoring window), the higher your score (up to 5). One clip contains two scoreable hazards. Clicking randomly or in a pattern scores zero for that clip. Maximum score is 75; pass mark is 44.
How long is a theory test pass valid for?
A UK theory test pass certificate is valid for two years from the date of passing. If you do not pass your practical driving test within those two years, you must retake the theory test.
What should I study for the theory test?
Official study materials include the Highway Code (free online at gov.uk), the DVSA's official theory test app, and "Know Your Traffic Signs" (free online). The DVSA app includes official practice questions and hazard perception clips. Third-party apps use the same DVSA question bank.
