How Old Is My Car? Find Your Car Age from the Number Plate

Every UK number plate contains a hidden date code. Once you know how to read it, you can tell roughly when any car was registered in seconds — no tools required. This guide explains how the system works, what age means for MOT exemptions and road tax, and how to confirm your exact registration date for free.

How UK Number Plate Date Codes Work

The current UK registration system launched in September 2001. Plates follow the format LL DD LLL — two area letters, two age digits, and three random letters. The two middle digits are the age identifier, and they change twice a year: once in March and once in September.

The rule is straightforward. For March registrations, the digits match the last two digits of the year — so a car registered in March 2023 carries the digits 23. For September registrations, you add 50 to the year — so September 2023 becomes 73.

Age IdentifierRegistration PeriodExample Plate
23March 2023 – August 2023AB23 XYZ
73September 2023 – February 2024AB73 XYZ
24March 2024 – August 2024AB24 XYZ
74September 2024 – February 2025AB74 XYZ
72September 2022 – February 2023AB72 XYZ
21March 2021 – August 2021AB21 XYZ
11March 2011 – August 2011AB11 XYZ
61September 2011 – February 2012AB61 XYZ

Older Prefix Plates (1983–2001)

Before 2001, the UK used a suffix then prefix system with a single letter denoting the year. Prefix plates run from A (August 1983) through Y (August 2001), changing each August. For example, a plate starting with Rwas registered between August 1997 and July 1998.

Pre-1983 cars used a suffix letter at the end of the plate. Very old cars — cherished registrations, Q plates, and pre-1963 vehicles — do not carry date-coded plates at all.

Where to Find the Exact Date of First Registration

The number plate tells you the registration period (a six-month window), not the exact date. For the precise date, there are three sources:

  • V5C logbook, Section D — the date of first registration is printed here. Check it matches the plate.
  • DVLA vehicle enquiry service — the free gov.uk service shows make, model, colour, engine and tax/MOT status, including first registration date.
  • VEHIXA free check — enter your reg and get DVLA data instantly including the exact date first registered.

Why Car Age Matters

Car age is more than a curiosity — it has real financial and legal implications:

MOT Exemption

Since May 2018, vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1960 are exempt from the annual MOT test. This is a rolling 40-year exemption that was previously in place but was extended by legislation. Note: the exemption applies to the manufacture date, not the registration date — these can differ for imported or late-registered vehicles. The vehicle must still be roadworthy.

Road Tax (VED) Bands

Cars registered before 1 January 1979 pay no road tax at all. Cars registered between 1979 and 2001 are taxed based on engine size. Cars registered from 2001 onwards fall into CO2-based bands — the lower the emissions, the lower the VED. From April 2025, even electric cars are subject to VED at the standard rate for the first time.

Depreciation and Resale Value

New cars lose the most value in the first three years — typically 40–60% of list price. After year three, depreciation slows significantly. Very old cars (15+ years) can appreciate if they are desirable models in good condition. When buying used, comparing the asking price against a VEHIXA market valuation will tell you whether the age-adjusted price is fair.

Insurance Groups

A car registered several model years ago may sit in a different insurance group than the current equivalent. Specifications, safety ratings, and repair costs change between generations. A VEHIXA full report includes the car spec, which your insurer uses to calculate your premium.

Car Age and Buying Used — What to Look For

When buying a used car, always cross-check the plate date against the V5C and against the odometer. A car registered in March 2019 with 45,000 miles in 2024 is covering around 9,000 miles per year — close to the UK average. One covering 25,000 miles per year needs more scrutiny for wear.

Also check for cherished plate transfers. A car with a personalised plate may be older than the plate suggests — the previous registration will appear on the V5C and on a VEHIXA report. Do not assume the plate date equals the car date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out how old my car is from the registration?

For cars registered from September 2001 onwards, the two digits after the area code tell you the year and half-year. 01-50 means March of that year (e.g. 23 = March 2023); 51-99 means September (e.g. 73 = September 2023). For older prefix plates (1983-2001), the letter at the start indicates the year. A free DVLA check via VEHIXA also shows the exact date first registered.

What do the numbers in a UK number plate mean?

On current-style plates (post September 2001), the first two letters are the DVLA memory tag (area of registration), the two digits are the age identifier, and the final three letters are random. For example, AB23 XYZ means registered in the DVLA's Anglia area, March 2023.

Are old cars exempt from the MOT test?

Yes. Since May 2018, vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1960 are exempt from the annual MOT test in England, Scotland and Wales. However, the vehicle must still be roadworthy and properly insured. Owners are strongly encouraged to have the vehicle inspected voluntarily.

Does car age affect road tax (VED)?

Vehicles registered before 1 January 1979 are exempt from road tax (VED) entirely. Cars registered between 1979 and 2001 are taxed on engine size. Post-2001 cars are taxed on CO2 emissions. Electric cars registered from April 2025 are now subject to VED at the standard rate.

Where can I find my car's exact date of first registration?

The exact date of first registration appears in Section D of your V5C logbook. You can also confirm it instantly using VEHIXA's free check — enter your registration number and the DVLA data returned includes the date first registered.
