About the Mazda 3
The Mazda 3 (written Mazda3) is a family hatchback and saloon. The second generation (2008–2013), third generation (2013–2019) and fourth generation (2019 onwards) are all traded, with Skyactiv petrol and diesel engines, and on the fourth generation a mild-hybrid Skyactiv-X petrol. The MPS is a hot-hatch version of the second generation.
Common Mazda 3 Problems to Check
These are issues commonly reported on Mazda 3 models. Not every car is affected, and exact years and engines matter. Review the MOT history for any advisory items related to these areas, and raise them directly with the seller during viewing.
- Second generation: Parkers warns the plastic variable-length inlet manifold valve can stick or rattle and cause cold misfires, and the ABS pump is pricey to replace; 1.6 diesels have been known to suffer injector faults
- Second generation: Auto Express reports an early Mazda 3 was involved in five recalls, including failed engine mounts, failing wiper motors and the ECU telling the engine to over-rev
- Third generation (2013–2019): diesel particulate filters can clog on cars used only for short trips, and RAC warns a filter can be damaged if the engine is switched off during regeneration
- Third generation: some owners reported the rear brakes failing before the fronts, caused by water entering and seizing the parking brake actuator, and recalls included a windscreen wiper relay fault and engine protection software
- Fourth generation (2019 onwards): What Car? says some diesels have been less reliable, with DPF warning lights and emissions-system problems, and owners report minor infotainment and sensor glitches
Mazda 3 Buying Tips
- Ask a Mazda dealer, quoting the VIN, to confirm all recall work and software updates have been done
- Check for uneven inside-edge tyre wear and suspension noise from worn bushes
- Check rear parking sensors (not standard on every trim) and rear scuffs, and test infotainment pairing
- Check underneath for rust on a second-generation car, and for track use on an MPS
Reliability Summary
Auto Express says most third-generation problems stem from poor maintenance. What Car? calls the 2019 onwards car a little concerning for reliability, particularly diesels.

Mazda 3 FAQs
What should I check when buying a used Mazda 3?
Run a full vehicle history check for finance, stolen status, and write-off history. Check the full MOT history for mileage consistency. Ask a Mazda dealer, quoting the VIN, to confirm all recall work and software updates have been done.
Is it safe to buy a high-mileage Mazda 3?
A high-mileage Mazda 3 can be a good purchase if it has full service history and a clean MOT record. Use the DVSA MOT history to verify mileage progression and check for recurring advisories.
Does the Mazda 3 commonly have outstanding finance?
Finance is common across all used car segments, and the Mazda 3 is no exception. Always run a finance check through VEHIXA's full report before any private purchase — a lender can repossess a car even if you paid the seller in good faith.
